The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History is the
home of an American treasure—the Star-Spangled Banner,
the flag that inspired our national anthem. In 1998 we launched
a significant effort to preserve this icon, which has been endangered
by time and exposure to pollution and the elements. In this Web
site, you can discover the history of the Star-Spangled Banner,
consider the flag’s symbolism, learn about the conservation
process, and explore our educational offerings.
The Star-Spangled Banner Campaign
The Museum closed on September 5, 2006 for major architectural renovations and is scheduled to reopen by fall 2008. The Museum recently launched the Star-Spangled Banner Campaign to raise $180 million to dramatically transform the museum's architectural appeal while reorganizing and renewing the presentation of its unrivaled collections.
You can play a vital role in transforming the National Museum of American History.Your tax-deductible financial contribution will help preserve and protect America's treasures and display them in exciting and engaging ways—for visitors today and generations to come. Make a contribution today.
We hope you will come visit the dramatic
new gallery to display the Star-Spangled Banner when the Museum
reopens,
