Freiherr Johann Heinrich von und zu Bodman

Freiherr Johann Heinrich von und zu Bodman (b January 21, 1851 in Feiburg, Germany; d April 26 1929 in Karlsruhe, Germany), a lawyer and politician,(1) married Anna (Annie) Steinway-Oaks, daughter of Henry Steinway Jr. and Ernestine Miller Steinway Oaks and niece of William in Baden-Baden, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. (Diary, 1884-02-15) Mrs. Oaks and her three daughters had moved there from New York.

Johann Heinrich and his wife Annie called on William Steinway while William was in Berlin in 1888. (Diary, 1888-09-18) He accompanied his wife to the United States in 1893 for the Chicago World's Fair (Diary, 1893-05-16), stopping in New York to see William. They returned to Germany in June of that year on the Trave with a letter of recommendation from William. (Diary, 1893-05-12, 06-25)

J. H. von und zu Bodman studied law in Freiburg, Berlin and Heidelberg and was a government official in the state of Baden-Württemberg, serving in the Reichstag in Berlin.(1) Although retired by the end of World War I, in 1918 he was persuaded to participate in negotiations between still recalcitrant political parties. He was known for his competency and tactful manners. The University of Freiburg administers his writings and archives.(2)
