War: Served with distinction on the frontier and with 10th Cavalry (Negro) in Cuba | Distinguished service in Philippines | Only general of the armies | Promoted from captain to brigadier general | Commanded the Mexican punitive expedition in 1916 | Appointed commander of the American Expeditionary Force.

Engineering: Army’s first Ph.D. specializing in electrical research | Established signal school and a radio research laboratory. War: Army aviation pioneer | chief signal officer who oversaw all army communications and aviation in World War I.

Frank Ross McCoy (1874–1954)

ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
War: Served in 10th Cavalry (Negro) at San Juan Hill (Cuba) | Led raid in the Philippines in 1905 that killed Moro chieftain Datu Ali | A brigade commander in World War I. Other: A noted diplomat | Directed relief efforts after the 1923 Tokyo earthquake | Negotiated terms of occupation of Japan after World War II.

Other: Instituted reforms at West Point to restore academic respectability as superintendent | Served as military governor of Japan.
