Charles Pelot Summerall (1867–1955)
CLASS OF 1892

Summerall transferred from infantry to artillery a few months after graduation. He saw combat in the Philippines and China. Returning to West Point in 1905, he taught artillery tactics for six years. He then commanded summer camps of instruction for army and National Guard artillery before assignment to the general staff in 1914.

America’s entry into World War I brought Summerall command of a field artillery brigade that first saw action in France at Cantigny. In 1918 he assumed command of the 1st Division in the Soissons and St. Mihiel operations, then of V Corps in the Meuse-Argonne offensive.

Summerall retired in 1931 as army chief of staff. For the next 22 years, he served as president of The Citadel, a military college in Charleston, South Carolina.
