Joseph R. Biden Jr. grew up in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and Claymont, Delaware. After earning a degree in History and Political Science from the University of Delaware, he attended the Syracuse University College of Law. Upon graduation, Biden practiced law, including time as a public defender, and was elected to his first office as a member of the New Castle County Council. In 1972, Biden, only 29 years old, was elected to the United States Senate, where he served for 36 years. After brief presidential campaigns in 1988 and 2008, Biden was elected vice president in 2008. At the end of his second term, Biden remained politically active until winning the office of president in 2020.
