The "object" is a highly detailed 1/2" scale model of a (at the time built) innovative car designed for and operated by the Cincinnati & Lake Erie Railroad, an electrically powered interurban railway line running from Cincinnati to Dayton and on to Springfield where extensions continued north to Toledo via Lima and east to Columbus. Twenty cars were built in 1930 by the Cincinnati Car Company - ten coach with a parcel/baggage space at the rear and ten deluxe with a parlor seating area at the rear which is the configuration represented by the model. When the C&LE ended passenger service in 1939 the cars were sold to the Lehigh Valley Transit and Cedar Rapid & Iowa City lines where they ran until 1952. The model was built by the late William Clouser specifically for the Smithsonian Museum.
