"Hardaway Meade and Thomas Roberts Baker established their prominent Richmond, VA, apothecary around 1856. The popularity of the Meade & Baker's mouthwash led to the formation of the Meade & Baker Carbolic Mouthwash Company, also located in Richmond. Eventually the company expanded and the mouthwash was then produced in several different cities. You can find out more about this business in the Virginia Tech Special Collections (see: Meade & Baker Apothecary Ledger, Ms2009-130 - Special Collections, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University).Rachel Anderson, Curatorial Asst., NMAH Div. of Med. and Science"
