The obverse of this rectangular bronze medal has portrait bust to right and “WILLIAM SYDNEY THAYER” and “BALTIMORE 1912.” The reverse is blank. William Sydney Thayer (1864-1932) was a research scientist and professor of medicine at The Johns Hopkins University Medical School. This medal was struck after Harvard failed to lure Thayer away from Baltimore. The “J. M. Miller” inscription identifies the sculptor, Joseph Maxwell Miller (1877-1933).
