Surgical Set


Wooden case for surgical set. The inscription on the brass plaque on the lid reads “John M. Woodworth / Supervising Surgeon / U.S. Marine Hospital Service.” John Maynard Woodworth (1837-1879) served as the first Supervising-Surgeon General under President Ulysses S. Grant, and then as the Surgeon General of the United States Marine Hospital Service from 1871 to 1879.
