Fritz Zernike (1888-1966), a Dutch physicist, invented phase contrast microscopy in the early 1930s, and won a Nobel Prize in Physics for this work in 1953. An inscription on this objective reads in part “MADE IN U.S. / 881244 / BRIGHT L.”
