Adolf Ziegler (1820-1889) opened an Atelier für wissenschaftliche Unterrichtsmodelle (Studio for Scientific Teaching Models) in Leipzig in the 1860s. His son, Friedrich Ziegler (d. 1936) continued the firm. This model is the tenth in a 12 piece set of Ziegler models showing the development of the human heart, based on the ideas of Wilhelm His. It is made of wax and sits on a round wooden base painted black. The Smithsonian bought it in 1895.
