Analytical Balance

Assay balance with a skeletal beam, a wood and glass frame, and an "Oertling London" inscription. Ludwig Oertling (1818-1893) was a German craftsman who moved to London in 1844, opened a shop in 1847, and soon became the leading balance maker in Britain. The last Oertling balance was manufactured in 1996.

This balance came from Wheaton College, a school that is now co-ed, but that was founded as a female seminary in 1834.
