Glass hydrometer/thermometer with mercury ballast. The lower paper label is marked “For every degree above zero one percent to be subtracted / For every degree under zero one percent to be added according to Richter.” The upper paper label is marked “Alcholmeter Richter and Tralles scale. Temp. 0 - 60° Fahrenh.” Jeremiah Benjamin Richter (1762-1807) was a German chemist who designed a hydrometer scale suitable for alcohol content. Johann George Tralles (1763-1822) was a German scientist who designed a hydrometer suitable for alcohol content.
