Pictures and Stories for the Young; or Pleasing Tales of Poetry and Prose contains several short stories, poems, and a fable. The selections are designed to reinforce moral values. There are several detailed black and white engravings of early 19th Century urban scenes and landscapes. The green front cover displays 11 small illustrations of children playing hoops, badminton, flying kites, playing baseball, etc. The back cover advertises other children's books by the publisher. There is a faded signature of a previous owner on the title page. This short reader is 24 pages in length.

This short reader was printed and published by Sidney Babcock (1797-1884) in New Haven, Connecticut. This 19th Century American publishing house was known for its series of morally instructive and amusing children’s books.
