Six glass vials containing chemicals for spectroscopic work: Barium Chloride; Chloride of Rubidium; Strontium Chloride; Lithium Chloride; Potassium Chloride; and Sodium Chloride. The “J. A. HILGER / 192 TOTTENHAM COURT ROAD / LONDON” inscription in the lid of the box is that of [Johann] Adam Hilger, a German artisan who moved to London around 1870, set up shop at this address in 1875, and dropped his first name soon thereafter.

These chemicals are associated with the Hilger spectroscope from Smith College, also in the collection.
