Half Gill Measure


Baluster measure with bud thumb piece; half gill size. Stepped, triangular extension is burnt to the flat lid, which has two, concentric, incised lines. Plain body has a galleried rim and flared base with traces of molding. Tapered, S-scroll handle with short terminal; conical strut with diamond- or lozenge-shaped attachment. Partial mark stamped on bottom exterior of what appears to be an armorial device with profile bust above a petaled motif and scrolls.

Mark not identified; catalog card notes that donor stated "might be a fake". Needs further research.
