Box or Trunk


Japanned and gilt-decorated trunk or box with stamped lid featuring a raised, ogee-sided rectangle; a scrolled hasp lock is on front, a gilt-brass, post-and-bail handle at top, and two hinges at back. Box front has stenciled floral design; fine gilt penciling is on all four sides of lid and box. Lid has a wire-rolled rim, while the box has sharp plain edges with a large raised bead below and a flat bottom. Both lid and box are made of five pieces soft-soldered at their seams on the inside. Tinned interior. No marks.
