This second type Remington Breech Loading Carbine features Remington's famous rolling block action. It fired a .50 caliber metal rimfire cartridge and was the last type of firearm purchased by the Union government during the Civil War. Approximately 5,000 .46 caliber Type I carbines were delivered in 1864 and 1865. The first .50 caliber Type II carbines were not delivered until September 1865. The U.S. government sold the bulk of these carbines back to Remington in 1870 who sold them to France for the Franco-Prussian War.
