political cartoon

This object is an original pen and ink political cartoon hand drawn on white paper by Clifford Berryman circa 1904 in Washington, D.C. It depicts a medical doctor approaching the Democratic National Committee Headquarters and holding a doctor’s prescription note that reads "RX I have ordered him away for several weeks." William Jennings Bryan, walking away in the opposite direction, holds a briefcase bearing his initials W.J.B. and an imaginary location named “Restville.” A hand inside the Committee doorway holds a thick stack of dollar bills ready to hand over to the doctor. Berryman’s number “39231” is stamped in blue ink on the reverse. The drawing is signed "Berryman" in the lower right area of the illustration. Bryan had been very influential in the Democratic Party and was the Democratic nominee in two presidential campaigns, first in 1896 and then in 1900, but lost both times to William McKinley. By 1904 his influence in the Party had diminished and Alton Parker became the Democratic nominee.
