Psychological Test, Primary Form Reading Aptitude Tests

Description:

This primary form of the Reading Aptitude tests was designed for children entering the first grade. It is divided into five sections – verbal (three tests), auditory (three tests), motion (three tests), articulation (two tests) and language (three tests). There is also space to record preferences (right or left) for the hand, eye, and foot, as well as remarks on physical disabilities and use of a foreign language.

The author, Marion Monroe (1898-1983), obtained her undergraduate degree from the University of Oklahoma (1919) and her master’s degree (1924) and doctorate (1929) from the University of Chicago. She spent most of the 1930s in Pittsburgh, working both as chief psychologist at the Child Guidance Center there and then, when this test was published, as specialist in remedial instruction in the Pittsburgh public schools. In 1942, Monroe married and moved to California with her husband.

She is perhaps best remembered as one of the coauthors with William Gray of the University of Chicago of the “Dick and Jane” series of readers that were widely used in American schools from the 1940s into the 1970s.
