As an undergraduate at Vassar College, Luella W. Cole (1893-1970) studied psychology. Sidney L. Pressey (1888-1979) got his undergraduate degree at Williams College and then was admitted Harvard University for graduate work. In 1916 and 1917 they met pursuing practical training as interns at Boston Psychopathic Hospital (Cole would be hired as a case worker there). The two married in 1918 and went to Indiana University where Pressey joined the faculty and Cole was a graduate student – she completed her PhD. They would both continue their careers at Ohio State University.
While in Indiana, Luella Cole Pressey prepared an achievement scale for second grade students. It had separate short tests for spelling, speed of reading, vocabulary, aand arithmetic. Initially the test was distributed by Indiana University, with a form in 1920 and a revised form in 1922. This example of the directions for that test (there is no example of the test) was sold by Public School Publishing Company of Bloomington, Indiana, as a test of intelligence.
For other tests by Pressey, see MA.316371.053, 1990.0034.135, 1990.0034.136, and 1990.0034.137. For a class list and tabulating sheet for this test, see 1990.0034.139.
