The obverse of this medal has a portrait bust to right and “DAVID HOSACK M.D.” The reverse has “ARTS AND SCIENCES” and images of objects pertaining thereto. David Hosack (1769-1835) was an American physician and naturalist. The “FŰRST . F” on both sides refers to Moritz Fürst (b. 1782), a Jewish artist from Slovakia who arrived in the United States in 1807. This medal was struck at U.S. Mint in 1830, and could be had in different metals.
