Patent model for James B. Bean, “Improved Method of Securing Artificial Teeth to Cast Plates,” U.S. Patent 69,615 (Oct. 8, 1867). James Baxter Bean (1834-1870) was a naturalist who collected specimens for the Smithsonian. He received a degree from the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery; served in Confederate hospitals during the Civil War; established a dental practice in Baltimore; and died in a blizzard on Mont Blanc.
