Leaf from the Gutenberg Bible printed in Mainz, Germany, ca1455. In the early 1920s New York antiquarian bookseller Gabriel Wells acquired an imperfect copy which he separated into leaves to be sold individually. Each leaf was presented in a leather portfolio with an accompanying essay by A. Edward Newton, "A Noble Fragment, Being a Leaf of the Gutenberg Bible (1450-1455)", which was printed by William Edwin Rudge.
