The Trade Dollar (1873-1885) was issued for circulation in the Orient to compete with equivalent size coins from other countries. It weighed 420 grains compared to 413 ½ grains in the regular issue silver dollar. Many of the pieces that reached Asia were counterstamped with characters by local merchants there.
