This blown and molded bottle is marked ESS CORT CITR, and would have contained the Essence of Cortex Citron, or the essence of citron bark. The rind of the citrus fruit Citrus Medica would have been steeped in alcohol to create a solution that would have been prescribed as an aromatic stomachic, cooling antiseptic, or antiemetic (to relieve vomiting and nausea).
