The Model 1895/14 Colt-Browning Machine Gun was the first gas operated machine gun adopted by the U.S. military. It was manufactured in a number of American and European calibers and could fire up to 450 rounds per minute. It was known as the "potato digger" because the gas operated lever action in front of the gun could cause it to dig itself into the ground when mounted in soft soil.
