An inscription on the box containing a contraceptive diaphragm reads “Ortho / coil spring / diaphragm / ORTHO PHARMACEUTICAL / CORPORATION / Raritan, New Jersey, 08869.” Ortho Products, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, was established in Chicago in 1931 to market Ortho-Gynol, the first prescription spermicidal contraceptive jelly. The firm bought a building in Linden, N.J., in 1940, and became Ortho Pharmaceutical in 1945.
