Abbott in 1905 and reported on Civil Rights issues such as Jim Crow-era violence, racial segregation, and other social issues of the day. The Chicago Defender featured writings of Langston Hughes, Gwendolyn Brooks, Ida B. Wells, and other African American luminaries. The newspaper began an online publication in 2019.
