Silas played in the NBA from 1964 until 1980, playing for the St. Louis/Atlanta Hawks, Phoenix Suns, Boston Celtics, Denver Nuggets, and Seattle SuperSonics. Silas was a two time All-Star, and won three NBA Championships—two with the Celtics and one with the SuperSonics. Silas went on to become a head coach after his playing career was over, coaching the San Diego Clippers, Charlotte/New Orleans Hornets, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Charlotte Bobcats.
