This is a completed wooden carving of a barn swallow, and it shows the complexities of Sadao Oka's carvings. This bird is very spread out with its wings and tail feathers, and Mr. Oka tried to replicate the color and details of the barn swallow by looking at the Audubon identification card (accession number 2016.0117.057). He used all kinds of small tools to first carve out the outline, then morph it into a three dimensional, realistic wooden bird.
