A complete wooden carving by Sadao Oka, this is most likely a woodpecker or a red-shafted flicker. It resembles the coloration and pattern of the flicker in the Audubon identification cards (accession number 2016.0117.055), which he used as inspiration for many of the birds he carved. This bird in particular is about to take off, its wings are spreading though it is still planted on the branch. This sense of motion is amazing, especially considering the limited tools Mr. Oka was able to use. For much of the carving he had only the bare tools, like small hand saws, a pocket knife, a couple wedge carving tools (2016.0117.104 and 2016.0117.110) and a small pick(2016.0117.100). Using only these, old paints, and leftover materials, Mr. Oka was able to create masterpieces like this one.
