Boxed sample of Sumac berries, a natural dyestuff. Collected from the Indians of Vincennes, Indiana, in 1882.
The original cataloging reads: "Sumach Berries. - Red berries yielding a reddish brown dye, used to color wool and cotton. The uncarded wool or cotton is dipped in the dye, taken out and exposed to the air, immersed again, and the operations repeated until a good color is obtained. From the Indians of Vincennes, Indiana, 1882. 57,525. Collected by Dr. E. Palmer." on object label.
