This Harper’s Weekly 1874 color print is entitled “Kept In At Recess.” It depicts four forlorn-looking children being kept inside a classroom, while the other students are led out to play by their teacher. The print was made from a woodblock engraving by an artist whose name can be seen in the lower left corner, possibly Y. A. L. Ruff from Stuttgart.
Harper’s Weekly was an American political magazine based in New York City and was published by Harper & Brothers from 1857-1916. It featured foreign and domestic news, fiction, essays on many subjects, and humor, as well as illustrations.
