Homeland was an espionage thriller drama series created by Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa that aired on the Showtime network from 2011-2020. In the series, Brody is a United States Marine sniper captured during the Iraq War and held as a prisoner of war by al-Qaeda. Aware that he was tortured and converted to Islam during his captivity, CIA officer Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) suspects Brody may have been indoctrinated by al-Qaeda fears he may commit acts of terrorism. Over the course of the series, Brody struggles with post traumatic stress disorder and his complicated loyalties as he wins election to the House of Representatives, attempts to assassinate the vice president in a suicide bombing, turns triple agent for the CIA, flees the country after being framed for a bombing, and conducts a dangerous mission in Iran. Homeland was critically-acclaimed, winning eight Emmy Awards, but also lauded as an exploration of contemporary issues from the post-9/11 military, global terrorism, and Iraq War to mental health and the meaning of patriotism. The series earned a Peabody Award in 2012 for its depiction of "a game of cat and mouse, a psychological thriller and a Rorschach test of post-9/11 doubts, fears and suspicions rolled into one."
