Old English type ladle with offset horizontal oval bowl and rounded downturned handle with midrib on back and a foliate script "C" engraved on front; no shoulders. Swage-formed pointed drop on back of bowl. Struck on back of handle with maker's mark "D•L" in raised serif letters in an oval above five hallmarks, a crowned leopard's head in round-bottom shield, sovereign's head facing right in profile in oval, lion passant in shield, Newcastle city mark of three towers in round-bottom shield, and Newcastle date letter "R" in raised serif in a square.
Maker is Dorothy Langlands (died 1845) of Newcastle, England; she was the wife of John Langlands II (active, circa 1795-1804) and continued his business in her name when he died until she retired in 1814.
