1758 George II shilling ladle with twisted baleen or whalebone handle. Raised bowl has bulbous sides, plain flared rim and single pouring spout with coin set in at bottom center; engraved "RMT" in conjoined foliate script on front of bowl. Silver-capped handle is secured by a single pin to the conical socket, which is attached to an oval pad on bowl. Spout underside is struck with five hallmarks, "G(G?)" in raised serif letters in a rectangle, a lion passant facing left in a clipped-corner pointed shield, a crowned leopard's head in a clipped-corner rounded shield, the raised lowercase roman date letter "m" in a clipped-corner pointed shield, and a sovereign's head in profile facing right in an oval. Handle broken off and repaired.
Ladle was made thirty years after coin was minted. Attributed to George Giles (active, 1762-after 1773), but is more likely George Gray (mark registered, 1782).
