Walter Gerard Gies (1896-1975) was a Baltimorean who began selling a liquid cleaner for type that he termed “Nutype” in 1921, and obtained a copyright on the term in 1935. In 1936, he obtained a patent (2,057,022) for a brush-like device for cleaning typewriter type.
