A white man, Major General Howze had gray/black hair with blue eyes. He is wearing an olive drab officer tunic with a white shirt underneath and a Sam Browne belt. Two U.S. officer collar insignia are seen along wtih two stars on the shoulder straps indicating his rank as Major General. Six military ribbons are seen on his left chest (identified below). The ribbons are difficult to see since the left chest is away from the viewer and the ribbons are not as detailed. The bottom portion of the portrait is not sketched or painted in detail. Major General Howze's signature is seen on the bottom of the portrait.
