Fragment of a 4 harness, overshot weave made of handspun coarse cotton warp, 22 ends per inch and weft of the same; with wool weft yarns colored light and dark brown with vegetable dyes, the light shade no doubt, being extract of boiled butternut shucks, forming the overshot block pattern, made up of 2-inch squares, alternating a 16-block square with a square of 38 small rectangles.
Because of the donor, Mrs. Allen's, importance in teaching and preserving early handweaving, and the use of materials she collected in books on the subject, NMAH should keep the fragments she donated in the collection, as part of the national woven coverlet collection.
