Fragment of a Summer & Winter weave coverlet

Description:

Fragment of a heavy "overshot" fabric of handspun yarns woven with plain tabby foundation of cotton. Pattern weft of golden brown (possibly butter-nut dyed) wool whch interweaves closely with the ground, giving a subdued color effect. The plain block portions of the pattern show a "bird-eye" effect typical of "Summer and Winter" weave
