Paisley-style jacquard-woven shawl, Scotland or France, 1850-1880s. Long rectangle; white groundand central field with 19" deep borders in a paisley/buta/cone design. Predominant colors: blue, green, red, gold, pink. White ground is 2/1 twill weave; thread count 100 x 77; thread is 2-ply, Z-twist. The white edge with fringe is 1/2 twill. The jacquard-woven paisley design supplementary wefts are in wool; the ground warp is silk, the ground weft, cotton. This shawl is of a type made either in Scotland or France, second half of the 19th century. The shawl has been washed and the blue dye has run. A few worn spots, and a yellow stain at one end. Otherwise good condition.
