Paisley-style square shawl, Norwich, England, 1800-1825. Ground: 2 x 2 twill; patterning: 3 x 1 twill. Warp yarns: off white, silk and cotton alternating, except for selvages which are all silk, in white and green bands. Ground weft: off-white wool and silk. Pattern wefts: blue, green, red, pale yellow (tan), and yellow-green cotton and white silk/wool. Dimensions: 47 1/4 x 47 3/4". Pattern: Small scale, regularly spaced allover floral pattern, framed by a double border 9" deep, curving around the corners. Stylized flowers alternate with cones/buta/paisley motifs. It is woven entirely in one piece, including the borders. Each corner pattern is executed slightly differently. Ther is a break in the border design, in one section where the flower becomes a mirror-image figure instead of a straight repeat. Condition: Fair, with a few small holes throughout. The silk warps extending into the fringe are broken away. This was probably an early drawloom-woven shawl, possibly from Norwich, England during the first quarter of the 19th c.
