This copperplate printed texile was made in England in about 1785. It is known as the "Apotheosis of Benjamin Franklin and George Washington, and depicts them in the comopany of mythical persons from the classics. Washington is shown driving a chariot pulled by leopards with Native Americans walking along beside him. Meanwhile, "America," depicted as a women, is seen seated in the chariot holding placque declaring American Independence. Franklin is depicted being lead to the Temple of Fame by Athena, with Lady Liberty beside him. A liberty cap can be seen on a pole in Lady Liberty's hand.
