A length of all silk, radium--like plain weave fabric, Mallinson's "Pussy Willow" trade name, quality #5459-G. Cylinder-printed Pussy Willow silk length. Process sample of innovative printing technique, before final finishing. The silk fabric was run through the printing machine and printed in pattern #2522--Sioux War Bonnet--the colors of which were applied simultaneously with the discharge solution so that the dyed ground tone will eventually be eliminated where printed. This sample is from a group of six donated by the company to illustrate the discharge-printing process. Selvage width; selvage inscription. Judging from drawings by free-lance textile designer Walter Mitschke in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts - Boston, Mitschke designed this print and possibly a few others in the American Indian series.
Mallinson's American Indian series followed the "National Parks" and "Wonder Caves of America" designs, and illustrates the company's continuing interest in using American themes, and in utilizing the collections of New York area museums for research and inspiration.
