Description:

Benjamin Greenleaf (1786-1864) was born in New Hampshire and attended Dartmouth College, graduating in the class of 1813. He was receptor of Bradford Academy in Massachusetts from 1814 to 1836, a, Massachusetts state legislator (1837-1839) and then, when this particular edition of his book was published, principal of the Bradford Teacher’s Seminary. Greenleaf’s The National Arithmetic first appeared in Boston in 1836 (copyright 1835) and had numerous subsequent editions well into the twentieth century. He also published textbooks on algebra and on geometry and trigonometry.

A faint mark opposite the inside of the cover reads: Alfred Brewster (/) Chatsworth (/) Aug 28th 1855.. . .
