Description
Wooden box containing 50 glass eyes, with a “GUMBERT” inscription in the lid. According to an advertisement published in 1900, Gumbert was a trademark owned by R. Hoehn & Co. (I. Mayer & Co., proprietors). Established in New York ca. 1860, this firm was the “Oldest and Largest Manufacturers and Importers of Artificial Eyes in America.” Most of their stock was manufactured in their factory in Europe, but “we have recently brought to this country some of our most skillful German workmen, and installed a plant where the eyes could be made under our personal supervision.”
