James Worthy (b.1961) played for the National Basketball Association's Los Angeles Lakers from 1982-1994. A 6-9 small forward, Worthy led the University of Carolina Tar Heels to the 1982 NCAA championship his junior season prior to being the first overall pick in the NBA draft.

With teammates such as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Earvin Magic Johnson, Worthy helped lead the fast breaking Showtime Lakers to seven finals appearances and three NBA championships (1985,1987,1988,) being named finals MVP in 1988.

A 7-time All-Star, Worthy averaged 17.6 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3 assists per game. His number 42 retired by the University of North Carolina and the Lakers, he has been inducted into both the Basketball (2003) and College Basketball (2006) Halls of Fame.

After retirement, Worthy spent time as a television analyst and part-time actor.
