Description
Pendulum odometer in a cylindrical brass frame. The “A. S. ALOE MAKER ST. LOUIS” inscription on the back refers to Albert Sidney Aloe (1842–1893), a Jewish immigrant from Scotland who settled in St. Louis, Missouri, in the early 1860s. He began selling spectacles and other optical goods, but was soon offering surveying instruments and medical and laboratory supplies as well. The firm traded as A. S. Aloe in the years 1867–1876.
