This brass instrument combines a set square and a portion of a protractor. A scale along the outside of the long beveled edge of the set square is divided into units about 15/16 inches long, subdivided to twentieths. A scale of equal parts runs along the curved rim which is adjacent to and outside the short edge of the set square. Neither scale has numbers.

The object was received with group of Japanese instruments exhibited at the Centennial Expositon, a world's fair held in Philadelphia in1876.
